We have a fantastic opportunity for students who are not studying IT about the careers and the many opportunities available for people without technical backgrounds. Speakers will be able to share their recent experiences regarding choosing degrees, heading off to university, looking for graduate level programmes and starting on their IT career paths.
Many incorrect stereotypes prevent girls from pursuing this field so we want to show them that not everyone working in IT is technical or works on an IT helpdesk. We also want to show how they can work in IT with any degree or background – many of our colleagues have degrees in English, History or Marine Biology, with previous jobs in retail, marketing and teaching. We feel that it is really important that girls gain a good sense of the opportunities out there before they leave school, and having organisations talk about these is the best way to engage with them.
November. The session will include a presentation, activities and discussion on what working in IT really means, how to get into it, and the career opportunities available to your female 6th form students.
During the workshop we will also introduce a nationwide competition Network Rail are holding in November aimed at girls between the ages of 16-18. This is to further challenge the perceptions girls have of working in IT, whilst helping them to develop their career knowledge and skills prior to their application to further education and beyond.
Among the prizes is two weeks paid work experience for the students within the IT department of Network Rail.
